Storms in Our Area
Severe Winds, Hail, Rain & More
Our state experiences a wide range of severe weather conditions throughout the year, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, blizzards, and floods. The state is located in the Midwestern region of the United States, where summers are hot and humid, while winters can be bitterly cold with heavy snowfall. The changing of seasons from winter to spring/summer is when we see heavy thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds. Tornadoes are also a significant threat with an average of 54 tornadoes per year reported in the state. We also experience severe winter storms that can cause hazardous driving conditions and power outages, with the heaviest snowfall occurring in the northern and central parts of the state.
Our area is prone to flooding, with many rivers and streams running throughout the state. Heavy rainfall and snowmelt can cause significant flooding. The state has implemented a floodplain management program to minimize the impact of floods, and many communities have developed flood warning and evacuation plans to protect residents. Despite the best of intentions, severe weather remains a significant threat.
